The World War I flying ace is one of the many imaginative identities Snoopy assumed during the fifty-year run of the Peanuts comic strip. It became one of Snoopy's most popular and long-lasting alter egos. Millions of Peanuts comic strip readers first encountered Snoopy as the World War I flying ace in 1965, when Charles Schulz drew the lovable beagle imagining his doghouse as a Sopwith Camel biplane. Outfitted with a scarf and aviator goggles, Snoopy imagined himself pursuing the Red Baron. Snoopy continued to appear as the flying ace in the Peanuts comic strip until Schulz retired in 1999. Pictures of Snoopy as a flying ace accompanied the astronauts on the Apollo 10 mission in 1969, became the subject of a permanent exhibition in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and adorned a US postage stamp. Steiff's successful interpretation of Snoopy as a super flying hero is sure to be well received by everyone.
